FAQ - HVAC and Chiller Coating

How long does the process take?

Typically it takes 2 to 3 days to apply the coating on a chiller/HVAC tubesheet and waterboxes. The first day to set up, build containment, surface prep, and apply the coating. Second day to apply final coat clean up and load out.

Is the process clean?

Curran internationals chiller/HVAC coating process is totally contained. Our techs bring in containment tents that completely cover the component being worked on. We tie-in an electric dust collector to capture any dust, thus completely eliminating dust from escaping our tents. Our technicians will then clean up and blow down any leftover dust and dispose of the waste grit. Your area will be as clean, if not cleaner than before we showed up.

Is sandblasting necessary or can other means of surface preparation
be used?

Other methods (grinder or cup brushes) can be used be are not as effective in removing all scale and obtaining a NACE No. 1/SSPC-SP5 “white metal blast”, which is the ideal surface preparation for coating. While other methods can be used, you will typically see coatings not lasting as long as if the surface were prepared using sandblasting.

What type of coating is used?

A two part, 100% solids coating is used on chiller/HVAC tubesheets and components. If a client has a specific coating specification or prefers one coating over another Curran International can and has applied all types of coatings.

Is there any curing time required before returning the Chiller/HVAC to service?

Yes, typically there is the need to allow for 36 hours after the application of the final coat for full cure to be achieved. This is dependent on the coating and can be reduced by introducing heaters. Of course, surrounding temperatures also play a role in the curing time. Contact Curran International for additional questions.

Can I reface my tubesheets myself?

Yes, Curran International provides a “do it yourself” Chiller tubesheet resurfacing kit. The kit gives you everything you need to make repairs to existing coatings and allows you to apply coating to any tubesheet.
