Precision Coatings for Severe Service—In the Shop or In-Situ

Curran International brings extensive experience in combustion spraying of alloy coatings, commonly known as Thermal Spray Applications (TSA). While TSA is often used for atmospheric protection of mild steel, Curran specializes in internal coating of fixed equipment, applying nickel, chrome, and precious metal alloys directly to tanks, drums, and exchanger channels.

Electric Arc Application for Dense, High-Strength Coatings

Curran’s team excels at electric arc TSA, a process similar to arc welding:

  • High-voltage AC current melts dual-fed alloy wires.
  • The molten particles are atomized and sprayed with compressed air.
  • The result is a dense, high-tensile adhesion coating with superior surface hardness.

Case Study: Bearing Shaft Restoration

A client required in-situ restoration of a 5-inch shaft damaged by a failed bearing journal, leaving deep circumferential grooves. Removing the shaft was not an option.

Challenges included:

  • Containing hot-work areas and overspray.
  • Protecting adjacent components.
  • Cleaning operational lubricants from the repair surface.

Process:

  1. Grit blasting prepared the shaft to NACE 1 white metal cleanliness.
  2. Thermal spray application deposited 40–50 mils of a nickel/chrome/aluminum alloy.
  3. Machining and polishing restored dimensional accuracy and surface finish.

The result was a fully restored, high-strength, machinable shaft—completed in-situ thanks to careful planning and coordination.
