Curran International has decades of expertise applying thermal spray metal coatings—from zinc alloys for galvanic protection to precious metals like 99% pure silver for extreme corrosion environments. Our ability to execute both shop and field applications ensures protection for critical assets in even the harshest conditions.
Why Spray Metal?
Metal spraying—combusting and atomizing wire alloys—has been used in industry for years as a proven method for:
- Corrosion protection in coastal, splash zone, and oxidizing service environments
- Surface hardening to extend the life of mild steel in high-wear applications
- Galvanic protection of structural steel
- Lining large-diameter pipe interiors with stainless steel
By using sacrificial coatings or specialty alloys, Curran helps industries prevent costly failures and extend asset service life.
Specialized Alloy Applications
Our portfolio includes:
- Zinc alloys – Galvanic protection for structural steel
- Nickel alloys – Enhanced corrosion resistance for crude drums
- Chromium and boron materials – Surface hardening for reactor towers and trays
- Stainless steel – Lining for large diameter pipe ID
- 99% pure silver – Protection for exchanger tube sheets at welded joints in hot corrosive service
For hot immersion services, high-temperature liquid sealers can be applied to extend coating performance.
Thermal Spray Application Methods
Curran applies thermally sprayed alloys using two proven methods:
1. Gas Combustion (Flame Spray)
- Uses oxygen and acetylene fuel gas with wire fed to the combustion nozzle
- Wire is atomized and propelled onto the substrate
- Ideal for field work where agility is needed and power supply is limited
- Lower capital cost and highly versatile in constrained environments
2. Electric Arc Spray
- Uses high voltage and amperage current, similar to arc welding
- Dual-fed wires are atomized into fine particles and sprayed with compressed air
- Produces a denser coating with high tensile adhesion strength
- Best suited for high-volume applications
